Biography

Noel was the recipient of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. He was born by emergency caesarean section at 32 weeks after a scan showed that his heart was failing. He was blue and floppy at birth and was resuscitated for 15 minutes and received 4 rounds of adrenaline. We were told that he was very unstable and would not be alive by the end of the day.

As days went by it was obvious that Noel has suffered extensive brain damage and damage to his other organs. He was unable to swallow and could not digest either breast milk or simple formulas. He suffered almost constant seizures and was totally unresponsive. He remained in hospital until he was old enough and well enough to be given a fundoplication and gastrostomy. He was finally discharged at 6 months and one day old.

Noel seemed to have a good few weeks once discharged but was readmitted to hospital on December 23rd with breathing difficulties. He spent his first Christmas in hospital. He has been in and out of hospital since then. His most recent visit was a month in RMCH's PICU when his lung collapsed. We had him baptized as we were told he would never be well enough to survive without the ventilator.

Noel is currently at home and requiring high levels of oxygen to keep his saturations at an acceptable level. We have been told that the damage to his lungs from so much illness and constantly aspirating his secretions despite regular suction means he is very unlikely to survive another winter.
