BiographyNiamh is our first child and when she was born we were over the moon. She was perfect. As Niamh began to get bigger she continually had chest infections, one after the other. We kept taking her to the doctors but they just kept telling us it was one of those things, gave her some antibiotics for a week and basically saying it was all in our heads.
She was 11 months old and she got
pneumonia but the doctor again dismissed us and told us to give her Calpol. Niamh ended up in hospital for 3 days.
This went on for the next year and a half until finally I managed to get her to see a respiratory specialist. He agreed her chest was crackly and she was suffering far too many chest infections than was considered normal for a child her age.
She was also small for her age, very pale and had a distended stomach. The Specialist referred Niamh to the hospital to be tested for Coeliac's Disease, and when we were there they also did a sweat test for Cystic Fibrosis.
The test came back positive for Cystic Fibrosis and we were devastated but also relieved that we now knew what was wrong with her. She began taking Creon and all other medications necessary to help her grow, put on weight and basically save her life.
Within a few weeks of the diagnosis Niamh was like another child, she had colour in her cheeks, her digestive tract was working as it should and she began gaining weight! She also grew 7cm in 8 months!
She has physio everyday and uses various things to help with this,eg a pep mask, tubes to blow bubbles through in the bath and she also does horse riding. She is at school and is in her second year and has never missed a day, which we are so proud of.
Niamh is a happy beautiful little girl and we do our best everyday to make sure she stays that way.
