Biography

It was diagnosed in utero that Ciaran had hydrocephalus at my 20 week scan, then at 32 weeks they told us he had Hydranencephaly and almost certainly would not survive very long when born.

We were told we would be very lucky if he survived even a few weeks. When Ciaran was only 5 weeks old he went through surgery to have a vp shunt inserted to help drain excess fluid from his brain. Everything went well and Ciaran started to become a very bright little boy.

When Ciaran was just 4 months old his vp shunt become blocked. He was rushed via ambulance and police escort from our local hospital to the main children's hospital which was over two hours away. Upon arrival Ciaran's neurosurgeon was waiting for him and was able to drain some fluid from his soft spot as he was still a baby. He was almost immediately taken to surgery to have his new vp shunt inserted. He spent the night in intensive care where he recovered well as doctors had really thought this was the end for him.

When he was just one year old he needed to have a ng tube for all feelings as he lost his ability to swallow and all was going straight to his lung. He had a year and a half wait until they finally gave him a peg tube. This has worked well for us. Ciaran has a chest infection every 4-6 weeks and we have been told to be prepared for one of these awful infection he won't recover from.

Ciaran is unable to walk or talk and suffers from seizures. He is a very bright alert little boy when well and we are very proud to call him our son.
