Biography

Lucy's disabilities were diagnosed just after she was born, she was noted to have a hole in her spine and enlarged head.

Lucy was transferred from the maternity hospital to the sick children's a few hours after she was born. At 2 days old Lucy had a 7 hour operation to close the hole in her spine and insert a device into her brain to allow excessive fluid to be drained.
At 2 weeks old Lucy had a shunt fitted into her brain to prevent build up of cerebral spinal fluid. The very same day Lucy had respiratory arrest and spent 5 days ventilated in ITU.
After Lucy had recovered from her spell in ITU she was allowed home. After a day we noticed she had fluid leaking from one of her wound on her head. Her CSF had become infected and she had to be readmitted to hospital.

Lucy then had treatment for infection in her brain and a new shunt placed. This shunt only last a few days before it too became infected. The same happened again with Lucy's 3rd shunt. Lucy 4th shunt was more successful and she was discharged home again aged 4 months.
Due to build up of pressure in Lucy's brain she had developed a bilateral squint. Also the damage of the nerves in her spine meant she would never be able to walk or stand.

At 8 months old Lucy was diagnosed with West Syndrome, a type of infantile epilepsy. Lucy had a very aggressive treatment for this and was injected daily with steroids for a couple of weeks, this resulted in her becoming immunosuppressed so we had to be very careful she didn't come in to contact with anything infectious. The steroids stopped the seizures and Lucy started an oral anti-epileptic drugs.
Just before Lucy turned 2 she had a bilateral squint repair and then grommets inserted to help her hearing. Both operations were successful.
Lucy started at special needs nursery when she was 3 1/2 and learnt to use signing as well as some words. Starting Nursery was a big change for Lucy but she has come on so much since then. Lucy spent 2 years at the nursery then moved on to special needs school in August 2013.

Lucy is currently really enjoying school and is now a very chatty little girl. Her behaviour can be very challenging at times however this is starting to improve as her ability to communicate does and also with her greater independence using her wheelchair.
