Biography

Amy was born in 2006, normal pregnancy, no hint of a problem. However she did decide to come slightly early and we had an emergency c-section. Right from the word go Amy seemed to be terribly ill. On the first day of life they whisked her away and I could not see her as I was recovering from surgery, all the day I asked to see her and finally I was told to get to SCBU as she was being blue lighted up to Great Ormond Street. I could not go with her as I was not insured to be on the ward with her as I had just had surgery.

From a distance I kept getting bad news, that she had a congenital heart problems, that she had a bowel problem, that she had breathing difficulties, feeding difficulties and a cleft pallet. After a week we were reunited but she was so poorly, going in to heart failure, being moved to a intensive care unit treated and then shipped back.

Finally we ended up at the wonderful Evelina Children's Hospital in intensive care. Within 24 hours she had a respiratory arrest and she was on a ventilator. We spent the next two months in intensive care on a ventilator and in that time she had three life saving emergency surgeries which were a bowel resection, open heart surgery and a pneumo- thorax plus battling MRSA and C-Dif. But she survived and got off the ventilator. We then went to high dependency, there she was diagnosed with part of her brain missing and short bowel syndrome, we did not know if she was going to survive for months and it was agony. She over came all of this and after six months in hospital we came home for the first time.

At about one years of age the genetics team finally found out what was wrong with her. She had a duplication on the short arm of chromosome 2. This is a unique condition so they could not tell us anything about what the future held for Amy. Amy is now 8 and her chromosome condition has left her with a severe learning disability, Autism, mobility problems, she is full care, she has a hearing aid, she has visual problems, she cannot speak and has behavioural problems. However everyday I cant help but love and admire my warrior princess. She has punched her way through all the horrible things, we are still here and we love our life.
