BiographyWe knew Samuel would be born with a congenital heart defect from when I was 23 weeks pregnant. We were booked in for an extra scan at 23 weeks as at the 12 week scan there was increased fluid round Samuel's neck which as well as being a marker for down's syndrome can also be a sign of a cardiac defect. Samuel was born with absent pulmonary valve syndrome and required open hear surgery when he was just 5 months old. After heart surgery and as he grew it became apparent that Samuel had several other difficulties. He didn't walk until he was nearly 4 and has no speech. He wears splints on his legs which help him walk, has a scoliosis of his spine, problems with his eyes and ears and has seizures. At 6 years old the school paediatrician suggested we have further genetic testing, this led to his diagnosis of mowat Wilson syndrome and pieced all his difficulties together. Despite all that Samuel has to contend with he is the happiest, smiley boy you could hope to meet. He attends a special school which he loves and is a sociable boy who loves the company of other children and people who are special in his life. He also loves buses!! |
