Biography

Lilia was born 13 days late after an uneventful pregnancy. Labour progressed well and all was fine until the late stages of labour when Lilia's heartbeat was lost. It was an emergency to get Lilia born as quickly as possible. Lilia was delivered naturally but when she was born she was white in colour, unresponsive and has no heartbeat. It took doctors over 10 minutes to resuscitate Lilia while her parents waited not know what would happen. Lilia was hooked up to a breathing machine and taken away to be 'cooled' in the neonatal unit to try to stop irreversible brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. Lilia's mother held her for the first time 5 days after she was born. Until say 4 of Lilia's life it was unclear whether she would live. She was cooled to just above hypothermic temperature and then on her 4th day alive was warmed up. Lilia has seizures during her first / weeks of life. Lilia was allowed home from hospital 3 weeks after she was born.

Lilia was closely monitored as the chances of brain damage and cerebral palsy were high. At 5 months Lilia had missed many milestones. She was diagnosed with quadrapelgic cerebral palsy (affecting all 4 limbs) at 5 months old. Lilia is unable to be independent in anyway. She is just learning to sit unaided. However, Lilia is so very happy and smiles all the time. Although Lilia id frustrated she is obs of the happiest little girls I know. We have high hopes that Lilia will learn to sit up and maybe even be mobile one day and we are doing everything to make this happen.
