BiographyAt 35 weeks pregnant my midwife was concerned about the babys growth so I was sent for a scan to check his size, it was then we were told Finley had a brain abnormality. The next couple of days consisted of more scans, blood tests and a lot of worry.
Finley decided to make an appearance at 35weeks and 5 days weighing 3lbs 2oz. Immediately Finley showed signs of strength even though we were told he probably wouldn't survive much more than couple of days. He spent 14 days on a ventilator. Improving day after day. We finally came home 3 days before his due date. Finley was a very unsettled baby due to a hernia so at 9month old he had surgery to remove them. After that Finley was much more settled and content. Finley started having seizures when he was 6month old. It was a horrible time, and he could have upto 20-30 seizures a day. It was heartbreaking but Finley never stopped smiling, he always had a smile on his face.
As the years passed, the seizures got worse. More frequent, more violent. One drop seizure was so bad, he knocked his front teeth out on his activity tray. In 2011 Finley's seizures had reached a huge amount some days 100+ he stopped eating and lost a dramatic amount of weight so it was decided he would have a feeding tube insterted. His weight and appetite started to improve and doctors decided he was now strong enough to have surgery for a VNS implant to attempt to control his seizures, in May 2012. The seizures have massively improved due to the VNS and he has continued to thrive and be happy. He has also had surgery to correct two dislocated hips in June 2013 & 2014.
He still has seizures on a daily basis but he never let's it get him down. And although he can not walk or talk, he loves life. He loves listening to music, he loves his little brother & sister. He enjoys walks in the woods and he wind on his face. His favourite thing to do is swimming and he comes alive in the water. He loves sensory lights. His favorite trip was when we went to London, he loved the buses and the river boat. He's a bit of a daredevil and enjoys the kiddie rollercoasters at a nearby theme park. His smile lights up the room.
