BiographyRobert was born on 27th March 1991 and he was our first child. As the weeks and months went by we could tell that there was something wrong. He wasn't gaining weight and was coughing all the time. We kept taking him to the doctors where they kept telling us it was just a cold and would soon pass. Months passed and he was still the same, they then decided to do some tests and we found out that he had cystic fibrosis at 11/2 years after failing the salt test twice.
At first we were very shocked and frightenend at what the future would hold. We were told that it would be a year or two and they would have a cure. After that it was another five years and then they said another ten years. There still isn't a cure for the disease.
He was an active child but now he spends most of his time in bed as his condition has deteriorated much more since then. He has a lung function in its 30's, where a 'normal' persons would be 100%+. We calculated that he takes an average of 25,500 tablets a year, 70 tablets a day. These include antibiotics, vitamins, enzymes and many more. He has to take tablets for when he eats food. When he was 10, he had to have a tube inserted into his stomach to give him nightly feeds to help him put on weight. He also has a portacath in his chest as he has IV's every 2-3 months (this is where a needle gets inserted into the chest so he can have 8 hourly antibiotics for 2 weeks at a time).
In 2001, he was diagnosed with a rare disease called Norcardia and this also damaged his lungs. He has Sinus disease too so he can't smell or taste. A few months ago we also found out he was borderline diabetic which was another setback.
He has been through many operations, procedures and treatments in hospital. A couple of months ago he was in hospital for 5 days, he didn't like it becauce the blankets weren't as thick as a Quilt and was rather cold. He ended up with 6 blankets in the end.
Currently he has a chest infection with pseudomonas for the last few years, he hasn't been able to get rid of it, but we will be trying some more aggressive treatments to try and clear it.
I think this site is wonderful! It is a really nice idea!
