BiographyWe were unaware of Calum's diagnosis antenatally and as he was our second child we were very excited and looking forward to his arrival. I had a water birth which was very special and had 6 hours of thinking all was ok. At his 6 hour baby check the doctor said he could hear a heart murmur which was not unusual so Calum would be checked the next day. The following day the murmur was still there and an ultrasound of his heart later that day resulted in the neonatal consultant saying 'we are failing to find some major components of his heart'. At this point our world fell apart and our journey with congenital heart disease began.
Calum had his first open heart surgery at 13 days old and spent 3 weeks in intensive care and 6 weeks at Bristol Children's Hospital. It was so tough to see our tiny baby go through so much. Calum has had further OHS at the ages of 4 and 6 and then spent much 2013 in and out of hospital with a wound infection. This required numerous surgical interventions and IV antibiotics for a long periond of time through a hickman line. Calum is now facing his 4th OHS in May/June of 2017 and we have been told this will be his biggest to date. This is a hugely scary prospect for Calum at the age of 11 and for the rest of the family.
