BiographyDylan was born by emergency c section 2 weeks after his due date.
He struggled to feed and on the 2nd day he started vomiting bile - he also hadn't pooed or weed in this time. He was sent to Bristol Children's hospital for a contrast scan to check his intestines as they suspected Hirschsprung Disease due to family history. The scan wasn't conclusive but Bristol kept him in and started him on rectal washouts, at 5 days old his bowel perforated and he was rushed into emergency surgery where they gave him a ileostomy (stoma bag). We were trained on how to look after and change the bag and we were all set to come home.
When Dylan was 4 weeks old they noticed his oxygen levels were very low and he was quite sleepy. They had done some genetic testing and it was on this day we found out he had Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome - a life threatening condition where the brain doesn't tell the lungs to breathe. He was rushed to PICU where he was intubated and sedated and one week later was given a tracheostomy, the condition means that he has to be ventilated every time he falls asleep or if he's unwell. Dylan finally came home 8 months later with a whole host of equipment and a care package.
Today Dylan is a cheeky 5.5 year old and is just about to finish his first year in reception. He doesn't let anything hold him back!
