BiographyMatthew was born at 28 weeks weighing 1lb 4oz. He had a stroke in the womb and was resuscitated twice during his first 4 weeks of birth. He had surgery at 4 weeks old to repair his heart and surgery on his ankles at 3 months old.
He fought through and managed to come home at 9 months old. His parents were told that he would never talk, walk or communicate and would probably need 24 hour care for the rest of his life.
He is one fighter though. He came to live with us when he was 2 and half as his mum's issues and illnesses meant she could no longer look after him.
He developed so much over the next few years with us. He started to sit up on his own, he started saying his first words and he has managed to be able to stand for a few seconds, which we are still working on to help his independence in the future. He can push his own wheelchair and has access to a power chair which he whizzes around in.
He entered a main stream school with designated provision. He has gone from strength to strength. Although he still needs 1 to 1 for all his personal needs, he has such an infectious personality. Every day he is smiling and gets on with life with such enthusiasm and strength. He can talk for England!
He is a mad Liverpool FC fan and would love to go to matches and loves watching them on TV and cheering them on. He has joined the choir at his new high school and was recently voted by the whole of his year to be class counsellor. He also last week received the head teachers "most improved student" award. We are his foster carers, but he is with us for life and we couldn't be any happier that we get to share our lives with Matthew. xx
