Biography

When I was 20 weeks pregnant I was told the baby had a hole in her heart with a chance she may be Down syndrome. I was offered a termination which I declined. The Down syndrome test confirmed the baby only had a hole in her heart. Delivery was pretty quick, I held her in my arms for 2 minutes before she was whisked away as she started to turn blue. I then had to go for surgery after the birth.
When I was in recovery nurses, doctors and paramedics were in my room along with Maddie in a special transport incubator. They told me the heart condition was worse than they thought and she was being transferred to Alder Hey where they diagnosed transposition of the great arteries.
She was scheduled for the correction procedure when she was 6 days old. On that day the doctors came along and said that they couldn't perform the operation as a scan earlier that morning found more problems. If she'd had the operation she wouldn't have made it. That same day her sats dropped and they had to call the crash team. Luckily after putting her in an oxygen tent she was fine and a few days later she didnt need the extra help. When she was 6 weeks old she was discharged with medication.
She went until 6 months before her first operation, when her oxygen levels were below 50 so they decided to fit a shunt. With regular hospital visits and tests Maddie got to three before her main operation. They had to re-wire and as well as the transposition she has a narrow valve. One side of her heart is small and squashed. The operation went well but it is not a permanent fix.
The doctor said they don't know when but her heart will fail and the only thing they can do is a heart transplant. Maddie is currently well and she has regular check-ups.
The blanket would mean the world to her. Thank you for considering us. The picture I have chosen is just before her main operation. Her first operation was at Alder Hey and her second was at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
