BiographyMcKenzie (Mac) was born at 28 weeks gestation and spent a turbulent 14 weeks in special care. He has catastrophic brain damage in the form of PVL and as a result has quadriplegic dystonic cerebral palsy. McKenzie also has chronic lung disease and a poor immune system. Catching a 'cold' has put him on life support three times in the past and he has come close several times since. He is non mobile with poor head control and non verbal. He has seizures which are uncontrolled with medication and he is totally gastrostomy fed due to an unsafe swallow. Cerebral palsy has led to postural deformities, he has scoliosis and has endured hip surgery twice on his right hip and currently has a subluxed left hip. He has also had surgery on both feet.
Mac is officially registered home schooled due to his poor immune system and the fact that he tends to shut down in noisy environments (sensitive to over stimulation) and receives support 5 days a week from the same special needs school which his brother Ibby attends. His physical development is around 4 months, cognition is around 18 months. Mac is classed as life limited and receives support from our local children's hospice.
Mac is a real hero and despite everything he goes through he fights his way back. He has a fantastic personality, cheeky, feisty, flirty, a winning smile and a laugh that dares you not to laugh with him. He doesn't need words to communicate, facial expression says it all. He loves water play and watching his fish swimming around the aquarium. Any messy play going on...he is in the thick of it and he loves going to the beach and listening to the tide roll in and the noise that seagulls make which he finds hilarious. He amazes me every day and touches the heart of everyone he meets.
