Biography

Alfie arrived very quickly 6 weeks early weighing 4lbs. We knew he would have Down Syndrome as this was confirmed during pregnancy. He had a feeding tube fitted as soon as he was born to check all his anatomy was connected and fortunately it was. We took him home at 7 weeks old with an NG feeding tube for breast milk and 24 hour oxygen.
We knew he would need heart surgery but unfortunately he was admitted to hospital unwell with an infection and he had a cardiac arrest. He was so poorly he was baptized in intensive care and we prepared to lose him. After many weeks he pulled through and was well enough for his heart surgery which he had successfully at 5 months old. He had a very stormy recovery and after many months in hospital he came home with 24 hour oxygen, a peg tube and overnight ventilation.
Today Alfie is an active 3 year old. He shuffles to get to where he wants to and is learning to stand and walk with splints and walking frames. He loves Mr Tumble and playing with his older brother and sister. He attends pre-school 2 mornings a week with the support of his carer. He is a joy to meet and has a strong will.
