BiographyEsmae was a healthy, happy girl until in December 2019 when she started getting frequent croup and was poorly almost every week. She then started complaining of her legs being tired when walking. She was only 3 so I didn’t really think much of it as she was small for her age too! It wasn’t until just after Valentine’s Day she started complaining of belly pains and making grunting noises, I knew she was in discomfort so I took her to the doctor several times over the next 2 weeks. We were told she was constipated (she'd previously had issues with constipation). I took her back to the walk in centre and was again told constipation.
She then started sleeping all day, that morning I took her and my other children to A&E in our local hospital. They gave Esmae an enema but she still continued to make the grunting noises. When a different doctor touched her stomach she screamed in pain. They put a cannula in and said Esmae had significant infection markers of 380 when normally it should be between 1/5. Esmae was to be admitted until they figured out what was wrong.
Esmae then had x-rays of all parts of her body and they still weren’t sure what was causing the infection as everything else was okay, no temperature etc. Three days later we heard the worst thing any parent can hear, your child has cancer.
The next morning we were taken to Pi-Brown ward and Esmae had to get over her infection before having her central line fitted. Esmae has spent over 60 days as an in-patient since diagnosis in March. She still smiles despite everything she goes through.
