BiographyYusuf was born with beta thalassaemia major. This is an inherited blood disorder which is lifelong and can be life threatening. His body does not produce red blood cells which means he will rely on generous blood donors for the rest of his life. Having this blood disorder is very symptomatic as it causes him to have chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, delayed growth, poor appetite, fussiness, jaundice, failure to thrive, frequent infections and more.
With every blood transfusion he receives, Yusuf also receives iron which accumulates in his body and causes further problems. These include joint aches, fatigue, depression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain etc. It can also cause fatal damage to organs. However, Yusuf is taking iron chelation tablets daily to try to counter this.
Yusuf has already had 2 operations and a minimum of 60 blood transfusions since his birth. Without generous people willing to donate blood he quite simply wouldn't be alive.
Yusuf loves superheroes but with everything he goes through he is the true superhero in our eyes!
