Biography

Kenisha was born a healthy weight and reached all milestones as expected. In August 2014 Kenisha had the Trialnet test to find out if she had the antibodies for Type 1 diabetes, these test were done due to both her brothers developing Type 1 diabetes within 12 weeks of each other. Kenisha's first results came back showing 4 out of 5 markers, she then had further test that came back in December 2014 which showed 5 out of 5 markers. This indicated that she would develop Type 1 diabetes but would not indicate when.

In January 2015 we met with the children's diabetes team to put together a plan for her. It was decided that we would regularly check her blood glucose levels and as soon as there were 3 consecutive readings over 11 mmol she would start on a small amount of insulin to keep her pancreas working as long as possible. In February 2017 she started having higher blood glucose readings so started on a small amount of insulin as planned. Four weeks later she started on an insulin pump and continues on a pump to this day. She also has a libre to scan her blood levels, the libre reduces the amount of finger pricking she has to do. Her diabetes has had a huge impact on her mental health and she suffers with anxiety.
