BiographyEdith-Rose was born by emergency section, at 2 weeks old she became unwell and stopped feeding. Edith was admitted to Royal Blackburn Hospital with suspected meningitis. Edith-Rose had a lumbar puncture to confirm the diagnosis and Blackburn worked alongside Manchester in deciding the best way to care for her.
After 4 days in Blackburn Edith was showing no signs of getting better and her CSF levels were incredibly high. She was transferred to Manchester Children's Hospital and admitted, going straight to ICU. Edith remained in hospital for 9 weeks where a scan revealed that the meningitis had left her with brain damage and she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Edith had an EVD inserted in the hope that she would be able to control her fluid levels independently. Sadly she was unable to and after 11 brain operations a 12th operation was needed to insert a VP shunt which is permanent and allows Edith to stay with us.
Edith has had further operations due to the growth of cysts that grew on the left side of her brain. After several operations to try and remove these this failed which led to Edith having to have her shunt removed due to infection and a temporary EVD fitted again for a further 7 weeks. After 7 weeks Edith was able to have her VP shunt refitted.
From all the operations Edith has now got severe brain damage and requires 24/7 care. She has been diagnosed with global development delay and now requires weekly physio and play therapy sessions. Edith is also under assessment for potential ASD.
