BiographyCamiyah was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia at 5 weeks old. We were told she needed an emergency surgery called the Kasai which hoped to prolong her own liver until eventually she would need a liver transplant at some point in her life. Unfortunately the surgery was unsuccessful and she was becoming very poorly. She spent most of her first year of life in and out of hospital with infections and having to undergo many procedures until November 2021 when she was put onto the transplant list. At this time she was so sick that she had to stay in hospital until she had her transplant. After waiting just 19 days Camiyah received her gift of life in December just one week before her first birthday.
Ten weeks later we walked out of the hospital with a completely different child. She was so full of life and able to do everything she couldn’t do before. A few weeks passed and she then started to get temperatures every other week with no found cause. She started to spend a lot more time in hospital again but we were only ever told she must just be getting a lot of viral infections due to being immune suppressed. Three months later she completely lost her airway, struggling to breathe and ended-up intubated in intensive care. Investigations found her to have PTLD, a type of lymphoma cancer in her voice box. She was diagnosed with this exactly 6 months post transplant. She received 8 weeks of 2 different types of treatment and she’s now free of PTLD. She’s now back home with her family healthy again and living life to its fullest.
