Biography

At a prenatal scan at 17 weeks 5 days we were informed our little girl had Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus every scan we went to the build up of fluid had increased so at 34 weeks I was induced and our little girl Gracie was born. Straight after birth Gracie was taken to neonatal unit until transferred to the sick children's hospital. Once there Gracie was taken to theatre for to close the hole I'm her back and for a device to be inserted into her head to help drain fluid she was then in HDU for 10 days till she recovered and moved to a ward. At 16 days old Gracie was then taken back to theatre for to get her shunt inserted. At 21 days old we were discharged to go home on that day we were informed that Gracie had hypothyroidism and was started on medication.

Then on Gracie's first Christmas she became unwell drowsy sick irritable we had to go to hospital her shunt had blocked she was put on external drainage surgery again on the 27th December. Then surgery again on 29th as her old shunt had wrapped round her bowel and caused a problem we were finally discharged 19 days later. For only to go back into theatre again a week before Gracie's first birthday her shunt had blocked again thankfully we were home before her birthday. Currently Gracie has had no more problems with her shunt since then.
Gracie is now 3 years old is a wheelchair user and starts mainstream nursery this year. She's currently having intense physiotherapy sessions as we are working on getting her up on her feet using a swivel walker and using gators to help with standing we are hoping this will teach her to eventually be able to walk with a Kaye walker.
