Biography

Oliver was born with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. He had his first 14 hour open heart surgery at just 4 days old (Norwood) He deteriorated a few hours after being in PICU and was placed on ECMO for 9 days. 2 days after coming off ECMO he was back in theatre for another OHS, again placed on ECMO. He spent 12 weeks on a ventilator, in that time suffered a stroke, kidney failure, several collapsed lungs, feeding issues, severe reflux. At 6 months old he has his third OHS (Glen) and then suffered a major stroke at 7 months old affecting his left side. Oliver spent his first 8 months in hospital.

Last July, Oliver underwent his 4th OHS (Fontan + tricuspid valve repair) there were many complications after surgery. Wound infections, kidney failure, para flu, chylothorax (not absorbing fat) high potassium and low sodium levels, PTSD. He lost all his muscle tone, had to learn how to sit, stand, bottom shuffle again. Just last week we were told Oliver’s heart function isn’t great and is now waiting for an assessment to see if he is a candidate for a heart transplant.

Despite all Oliver’s health issues he’s full of smiles, attends mainstream school and is loved by everyone he meets. He is my superhero.
