Biography

From birth, Riley didn't meet any of his milestone targets. For so long this was put down to a long stay in High Dependancy Unit when he was 7 weeks old after contracting a virus and suffering low oxygen levels for a period of time.
We spent many years being told to 'wait and see' by our GP and that he would catch up on everything. But then a new class teacher called us in one day and said that she thought there was more to it and supported us in getting Riley assessed for Autism. It took close on 3 years to get Riley's diagnosis and numerous appointments and tests. During this time Riley's mental health suffered badly and he went on to part time schooling as he was unable to cope. He was (still is) quite self conscious of his speech and facial tics which can sometimes hurt him.

Riley also suffers badly with hypermobility, at the moment in his one leg, which results in his mobility being affected and a lot of pain on a daily basis. He also has developed an issue with his neck/back and is going to be starting treatment for that soon.

When Riley becomes too overwhelmed from his sensory issues his coping mechanism is to hide under a blanket. Whereever he is! This helps him regulate and reset - the more blankets he can use the better.
