Biography

At birth Penny had obvious ‘deformities’ including an extra thumb, flat nose and facial palsy. Genetic testing was carried out and discovered she has a chromosome 16p11.2 deletion. Penny was also born with a hip dysplasia and was in a brace for 14 weeks before being reduced to just a night time brace, which was removed as her hips repaired.

As Penny got older she was sent for more hearing tests as she wasn’t speaking at the age of 3 1/2. This is when we found out she was deaf in her right ear. Around the same time she was sent for an MRI due to choking on foods and sleep issues and they discovered Penny had a chiari malformation. After close monitoring at the age of 8 Penny's chiari started to give her worsening symptoms and they discovered she had fluid on her spine which was progressing quite quickly, so it was decided she needed to have brain decompression surgery. We are currently waiting for an MRI to see if she needs another bigger brain decompression surgery.

Penny has learning delays and is selective mute. Despite all of this Penny is a very happy determined little girl who lets nothing stop her. She has a huge love for her friends and family, her keyboard and football.
