Biography

Lucas is 13 years old and has had a learning disability and autism since birth. Throughout his life he has faced many challenges due to global developmental delays.

When Lucas was 10 he was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which has become his biggest challenge so far. Initially, the condition affected just one knee joint. Steroid injections helped manage the arthritis for around three years but, unfortunately, the condition has since spread to multiple joints including his face, back, knees, ankles and toes.

Living with JIA has had a significant impact on Lucas's daily life. As the condition is incurable treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing its progression. His right knee is particularly badly affected and on many days he relies on a wheelchair, because walking, playing and taking part in activities can be extremely painful.

Doctors have advised that Lucas may eventually need a knee replacement. Before reaching that stage, he has been trying tablet steroid treatments, but unfortunately these have not been successful and have made him feel more unwell.

Lucas understands that this is a condition he will have to live with for the rest of his life. More than anything, he would love to be able to run around and play with his friends. On the days when he feels well enough to join in he is often unable to play for long before the pain becomes too much.

Receiving a quilt would mean a great deal to Lucas. Having one made especially for him would be something unique that belongs only to him. It would help keep him warm during colder days, provide comfort when his joints are painful, and bring a smile to his face during hospital stays and difficult times.
