Biography

Vance had a tricky start to life, he was born at 29 weeks and fought through many infections and setbacks. He suffered two big bleeds on the brain which caused him to have cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

When Vance was about 10months the doctors noticed he had a very enlarged spleen which was causing him many problems, including pain, high internal pressures, and lots of scary episodes of bleeding. Vance needed Lots of operations for this and then in 2019 the hard decision was made to remove the spleen. This operation was followed by many complications and he needed to go back to theatre and ICU four times in the following weeks.

For 12months after his splenectomy Vance lived a "normal" life with less hospital admissions and he learnt to walk now the pain and enlarged tummy had gone. But we then started to notice small signs something wasn't right again, and after multiple test and admissions Vance was diagnosed with liver cancer. We were told he had no options of treatment just the option of a liver transplant which may not have been possible due to his previous surgeries. But after many meetings the doctors agreed to list him for the transplant.

We waited 6 weeks (felt a lot longer) to get the call they had found him a match. The transplant went smoothly and took about 12hours. We were told the cancer had spread throughout the whole of his liver but luckily they managed to remove it all. Vance eventually came home on lots of new medications.

In 2023 Vance was in hospital due to some complications following his transplant, He was seen by a ENT doctor on one of his many admissions who noticed a problem with his tonsils and the area around them. Within the week he had them removed then 10 days later he had a big bleed which unfortunately has left him with a visual impairment. We finally got the histology results back from Vance's tonsils which showed he now had Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, a type of lymphoma which had been caused by his anti rejection meds. Vance had to have immunotherapy to treat the PTLD.

Vance has endured a lot in his life but he is still a happy, smiley cheeky boy who always astounds us with his bravery and determination.
