BiographyOwen was born with a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. I had previously been told, at my 20 week scan, that my child had this heart defect and would need to be full term to have a chance of survival but Owen had other ideas. He came 8 weeks early and had to be rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital where he was given a 25% chance of survival.
He spent almost 3 months in intensive care until he reached a good weight to have his first cardiac surgery. No one gave him much hope but I knew he'd be ok. I was right!
A month after he was allowed home but after only a few weeks he started to struggle. He needed stage 2 of his next surgery. Only a week after, we were allowed home and his heart continued to do well. Unfortunately Owen was not reaching his other milestones. Delayed in most things autism was mentioned and Owen was diagnosed in 2013 along with learning difficulties.
At the start of 2014 Owen's health started to decline and he had stage 3 surgery. After a difficult time Owen came home 2 months later and he's thriving!!!!
Eventually Owen will need a heart transplant. He doesn't talk, still won't eat so is peg fed but despite his difficulties he's the happiest boy I know! He's my superhero!
