BiographyLucas is two years old. He was diagnosed antenatally at 20 weeks with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. What this basically means is he has half a heart. He had to be born hundreds of miles away from home so he could have open heart surgery by specialists in London. He had his first open heart surgery when he was 3 days old. Then another at 14 weeks old. He will have another one in the next year or so.
The surgeons are creating him a new circulation to enable him to live. Without this surgery, his condition is 100% fatal. Unfortunately this is palliative surgery and his heart cannot be fixed. One day his half a heart will fail him and the only option left is to be assessed for a heart transplant.
His life with half a heart is still full of fun even though he often has no energy and can’t keep up with his peers. He turn blue because he doesn’t have as much oxygen in his body and a simple cold can put him in hospital. He has lots of hospital appointments, procedures and will be on medication for life.
He is a true superhero and never lets his condition define him.
