Biography

Our beautiful boy Jack was born in 2010 weighing a great 8lbs 12oz. He was very quiet at birth and over the next couple of days he became more quiet, hadn't opened his eyes and had poor feeding. He was taken in to Special Care for some tests and immediately ventilated and a team from Newcastle were called to transport Jack to intensive care in a much larger hospital. Jack remained ventilated and largely unresponsive. He had many tests and then at 8 days old we first heard his diagnosis of NKH. Jack lacks the enzyme which breaks down the amino acid glycine so unfortunately glycine builds up to toxic levels in his blood and fluid surrounding the brain which leads to uncontrollable seizures and severe development delay. We were told the very worst news that he was not expected to breathe on his own and would not survive. Jack however had other plans and pulled the ventilation out at two weeks old showing us his determination and ability to breathe.

Jack is severely affected by NKH but he is a happy boy and now has a healthy little sister and brother who love him dearly.

Jack continues to shield due to risks of Covid19 but before Coronavirus he attended school 3 days a week, he enjoys the sensory room and hydrotherapy pool.

We have frequent hospital stays with Jack often due to seizures or respiratory illness. He is well known and extremely well cared for on the Children's ward in Carlisle.
