Biography

Sophie was born at 38 weeks gestation. She had an induced birth due to measuring large. Normal delivery, nothing obvious happened.

She developed jaundice at just 1 day old so ended up in special care to be treated for it. She had trouble feeding right from the start but we were told it was just the jaundice and she would get better. That never happened. We fought to get every ounce of milk into her. Because of this the doctors kept a close eye on her.

Signs were there from early on that something wasn't quite right. She always had her fingers fisted in her palms. She also had a very floppy head. Physiotherapy was started very early at about 10 weeks old to try and help with her head control.
MRI scan at 2yrs old showed slight brain damage and Cerebral Palsy was officially diagnosed.

Over time Sophie struggled with feeding and eventually a swallow study showed an unsafe swallow so Sophie had an NG tube fitted followed 13 months later with a gastrostomy tube. Tonsil removal, saliva gland removal and relocation were performed to try and help Sophie control the amount of saliva she produced.

Sophie now has botox into her leg muscles to help with the tightness so she is able to straighten her legs.

Sophie has been at her special school since September 2009. She loves schools.
She has an eye gaze which she uses as her voice as she is non-verbal. Recently she has got a power chair which she is learning to drive herself using head switches as she has little hand control.

Sophie is now a beautiful 14yr old young lady who even though is fully wheelchair bound is very mentally with it.

Sophie loves life and is a very social person.

She is fully reliant on people for every aspect of her care.
