Patchwork
The fabric pieces were pressed with an iron and the squares and sewing machine prepared:
Standard quilting practice is to use a ¼ inch foot on the machine. However, since Aida is more likely to fray, I prefer to use a 3/8 foot to give a little extra margin on the seam.
The first square was sewn to a piece of fabric as shown below:
Again due to the tendency of Aida to fray, the seam was overlocked. I have a special machine for this which I recently purchased from eBay, but it can be done with a zigzag stitch on a normal sewing machine. I use cheaper thread in the overlocker since it is not visible on the final quilt:
Here is the seam after overlocking:
This process is repeated until 3 squares and 2 fabric pieces have been joined in a chain. They are then pressed with the iron:
The process is repeated until there are four chains of 3 squares:
Next, the green horizontal fabric pieces are pinned to the panels:
The process of stitching and overlocking is followed until all green fabric pieces have been attached:
Next, the top and bottom pieces are attached:
And finally, the side pieces are attached, completing the patchwork process.
