Biography

Bailey was diagnosed with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukaemia at 11 wks old. A very rare form of leukaemia with a low success rate of long time survival! It was the most devastating news. He went through 2 operations straight away and he was immediately put on the waiting list for a bone marrow transplant. Constant blood tests checked his leukaemia to see how fast it was progressing. After a few months we also received his noonan syndrome diagnosis. Unbeknown to us this increased his chances of survival because some trial studies showed a small percentage of children with JMML and noonan syndrome amazingly the leukaemia resolved itself after a few years. Baileys oncologist team at 3 hospitals discussed the possibility of waiting especially as his blood counts were slowly coming down so not getting worse.
Monthly blood tests revealed good news each time and his liver and spleen started to shrink eventually back to normal size after 2 yrs. Aged 8 he was finally signed off from Oncology. What an emotional period that had us in bits alot of the time. We had Bailey christened in hospital when first diagnosed because we were expecting the worst.

Next obstacle - Noonan Syndrome and ADHD
Bailey struggled with his milestones and wouldn't feed well. He had failure to thrive as a baby and we saw medical experts including OT, speech and child development services.
We taught him some basic Makaton sign language because he still couldn't talk until he was 3 1/2 yrs old. Never quiet now!
He struggled starting school doing everything in his own time. He learnt to read fluently aged 10 but still struggles with most subjects at school typically 3 yrs behind. We managed to get him a statement in school year 3 with the help of his very good SENCO. This has definitely helped with his education. Just recently after years of us knowing there is something else affecting his learning/behaviour he finally received his ADHD diagnosis and will be starting on medication to help him concentrate at school. We end on fantastic news which he was excited to tell me - he's gone up 3 sub levels in maths this yr and 2 in spelling and literary. We are so proud and the future looks good for Bailey and with medication for his ADHD we can see him flying through those levels and can see our amazing gorgeous kind son achieve all he was meant to.......
