Biography

Iris is the 3rd of our 4 beautiful girls; she slotted into our family like she was born to be with us. She was a dream child, easy in every way and pleasant, but quiet. She was due to start full time school in September 2019, which she had been looking forward to, and more than ready for as due to her birthday she had attended the school's nursery for two years. She began displaying signs of illness only a few short weeks before her diagnosis. A slight limp in her right leg and lethargy had been noticed. Initially we were dismissed by the GP, but her eyes went yellow and the glands in her neck swelled until we could see them. We were admitted to our local hospital and then transferred to the RVI, we realised this was very serious. She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma three days later.

Our whole world fell apart. Unless you have been through a child cancer diagnosis you can never know how deeply it affects a family. We started an intensive treatment protocol straight away consisting of 80 days of induction chemo, followed by high dose chemotherapy, radiotherapy and we are currently part way through 6 months of immunology. Unfortunately Iris has suffered quite bad luck which has resulted in many additional complications and resulting stays in hospital beyond just her treatment, in fact during the first months we were there more than at home. This inevitably disrupted the whole family. We have had to give up work, all our plans and hopes are cancelled. We now live day to day, never knowing what's coming, and unable to plan ahead. And with covid everything has been that little bit harder!!!! But we look to a future where we are free of cancer and can enjoy the rest of our lives. Iris has faced this with courage and a smile on her face, and we have had lots of love and support from friends and strangers alike.
