Biography

Alfie was born at 34 weeks but had no medical conditions. Aged 3 he was on the pathway for diagnosis of autism and sensory processing disorder. A few months later he had a minor tumble off the sofa (something he'd done countless times before!). Within half an hour he couldn't move his arms so we rushed him to hospital.

After many tests and scans we were given the devastating diagnosis of fibrocartilagenous embolisation, which is similar to a spinal stroke but very rare. There's only 25 other confirmed cases in the whole world. This paralysed him from the shoulders down. He's had a pacemaker fitted to help with bradycardia (low heart rate), a tracheostomy to help him breathe and a gastrostomy to feed him. Following his injury he has developed a condition called autonomic dysreflexia which is fairly common in people with spinal cord injuries and causes dangerously high blood pressure that can be life threatening if left untreated.

Throughout all this Alfie has been an absolute warrior and has shown amazing resilience, facing every obstacle with a smile on his face.
