News 1st Jan 2013 - 13 Jan 2013Alice Pyne We would like to pay tribute to Alice Pyne, a wonderfully inspirational young woman who passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. Alice received a quilt from us in 2009 (on our website as Alice P). Alice went on to become a young woman of worldwide repute through her blog: http://alicepyne.blogspot.co.uk. She campaigned tirelessly for eligible people to join the bone-marrow donation list, and set up her own charity Alice's Escapes. Last year she received the British Empire Medal. Alice touched so many people in her short life and we are devastated to hear the news of her passing. Rest in peace, Alice. A bright star shines tonight. We have received some particularly generous cheques recently which will help enormously - thank you very much indeed :) 2012 Review of the Year2012 was the fifth year of LoveQuiltsUK, and we have had another very busy year! Magazine Appearances We appeared in Popular Patchwork's March 2012 edition with a 4 page article featuring photos of many of our kids and quilts! Several new quilters joined us as a result.  Stitchers Many new stitchers have joined us this year, and we have noticed a big surge in cross-stitchers finding out about us through Facebook. We welcome you all, and we are so fortunately to continue to enjoy support from stitchers who have been with us for a few years. We are particularly impressed at how welcome new stitchers are made to feel on our Facebook group - in fact, no-one remains "new" for long! Many thanks to all of you for making our community what it is :) Quilters Many of the quilters who joined us in 2011 have continued to quilt for us in 2012, and we thank you all for you efforts. LQUK depends so much on quilters and we thank you for your generosity :) We have had several new quilters this year, mostly through the Popular Patchwork article in March, but a few have contact us via Facebook. Welcome to Liz N, Cathy, Helle, Margaret, Maureen, Lesley, Brenda, Gill, Carol P, Sandra G and Jenny. A few of our cross-stitchers have also turned quilters this year, thanks to Kita, Marion, Rebecca and Christine - hope we haven't left anyone out! :) Kat We all had a big shock in August with our co-ordinator Kat being diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to Kat undergoing chemotherapy, Gaynor took on full responsibility for LQUK with assistance from her mother, Mrs T, in receiving and uploading squares to the website. Kat's treatment is progressing well, and we hope that she will be fully back with us some time in 2013. Members of LQUK made Kat two presents, a quilt and a snowman wall-hanging - well done to everyone involved. 
 Funds We are very grateful to everyone who has sent in funds this year, and we are pleased to report that we are finally on solid ground (for now!), with good fabric stocks as we end 2012. Thank you all :) We would like to mention the following people who held events for us: Zara from Trinity, Alison with her Beavers sponsored walk, Christine with her dress-down day, Mrs E Thomas of Swansea - Easter Bunnies and various other stalls, Leanda Vickers' daughter's boyfriend with a bicycle ride, and Marie with her Christmas stall. Although we have singled a few people out, we really do appreciate *all* donations, big and small, so thank you very much to all our supporters! We were also able to make our first Gift Aid claim of £161. In Memoriam We remember three children who received quilts from LoveQuiltsUK who grew their angel wings this year: Joshua H, Ben S and Jon Paul O. Rest in peace xx Squares received We have received an amazing number of cross-stitch squares this year: Total squares received in 2012: 1182 squares! It is truly humbling the amount of time and love that have gone into these wonderful squares, well done to everyone involved and thank you for your generosity :) Quilts completed We have had a record year for completed quilts this year, smashing through the 100 quilt barrier, and the 150 quilt barrier! 77 Quilts were completed in 2012! That brings our overall total to 174 quilts since 2008! Thank you so much to our quilters without whom we could not have achieved this wonderful total. We are already quickly stitching towards the 200 quilt mark! We thought it would be nice to have a look back through all the quilts which were donated to children in 2012:
Overall, we can safely say that it has been another great year for LQUK! We wish everyone a Happy New Year and here's looking forward to having Kat back and making more children smile in 2013! |
